Letter-spacing adjustments are frequently used in news design. Tracking can similarly go in either direction, but with metal type, one could make groups of letters only farther apart (positive spacing). Digital kerning can go in either direction. Thus, a kern in that sense could bring letters only closer together (negative spacing), but it was possible to add space between letters. In its original meaning with metal type, a kern meant having a letter stick out beyond the metal slug it was attached to or cutting off part of the body of the slug to allow (other similarly-trimmed) letters to overlap. WinKeyer replaces PC generated Morse and produces perfectly timed elements at speeds up to 99 WPM. This shows up even more at higher speeds such as you would find in a CW contest. All it takes is a long disk search or slow peripheral access to upset the intricate timing of Morse letters.

Morse keying that is generated by a PC based application is prone to timing problems that are a result of the multitasking nature of Windows and other operating systems. WKmini is based on K1EL's WK3 IC, the best way to connect your PC to an amateur radio transceiver and send Morse both under computer control and by iambic paddle. A solid state relay insures a 5 KV isolation barrier between radio and PC, virtually eliminating ground loops and conducted RFI problems. Like WKUSB, it has a custom metal enclosure with RFI and ESD protection. This allowed us to put WKmini into a very small package. Standalone operation is not supported so an internal battery is not required. Speed and message selection are controlled by the host application so a speed pot and message pushbuttons are not needed. Letterpress also uses Markdown syntax, which is basically a web language for writing on the web that preserves the structure of your document. Since the point of using Letterspace is to make your notes more organized and easier to search, it’s a welcome addition that doesn’t get in the way. To make finding the hashtag key a little easier, Letterspace included a hashtag key directly beneath the swipe bar, along with a hyphen and asterisk key. If you need to highlight a selection, you can just double tap the swipe bar. I used my thumb on the swipe bar most of the time, and I discovered you can navigate in all directions (like a normal mouse cursor) as long as you start with your finger on the bar. The swipe bar rests just above the keyboard, and it’s actually pretty handy for moving around a paragraph without moving your hands away from the keyboard.
